Playing Saxophone looks very cool and makes a big noise! All saxophones though are quite heavy and should come with a strong neck strap that needs to be adjusted to suit the individual player. Alto Sax is the most popular beginner saxophone due to its size and cost.
Most people are able to pick up a saxophone take a big breath and make a sound immediately, however to make the sound pleasant and musical requires breath control, development of mouth shape ( embouchure) and good fingering technique, hence lessons are recommended.
Saxophone is a versatile instrument being known for jazz tunes, big bands, played solo and as as backing instrument.
A TYPICAL SAXOPHONE SESSION:
Typical activities used for beginners to get them started: Warmup exercises for breath control and tone, reading simple tunes, listening and quizzes as well as the most important part of playing well known music.
WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR LEARNING SAXOPHONE:
Saxophones come in different sizes, Soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and so on. The most common beginner’s saxophone is Alto as the size is suitable for children from approximately age 8 upwards, it is usually the least expensive and easiest to hold. A neck strap should always be used.
Saxophone’s usually come in a hard case where they are best stored. Make sure you have a saxophone cleaning cloth and mouthpiece cleaner also.
Reeds are an easy to break item,so a supply of at least 3 ( a box is better) of size 1 or 1/5 for beginners is recommended with a plastic reed guard to protect them.
